Read the archives: China's tests new anti-missile technology. China used a top-secret SC-19 anti-satellite (ASAT) missile in a test last year against a target missile as part of a missile-defense system that remains shrouded in secrecy. The ASAT missile was fired against a new medium-range missile and details were disclosed in a State Department cable made public recently by WikiLeaks that included an outline of a diplomatic protest note to Beijing about both Chinese weapons programs. The cable provides the first detailed U.S. assessment of what defense officials say is a major strategic advancement in China's military buildup. It reveals that China's anti-satellite system was developed for use not only against satellites but is part of a larger strategic missile-defense system.
China's Missile and Stealth Fighter Advances Draw U.S. Attention. Advances in Chinese military technology, including a new anti-ship ballistic missile and possibly a radar-evading fighter plane, are drawing scrutiny from Pentagon officials days before Defense Secretary Robert Gates is due to meet with his counterpart in Beijing. Defense Secretary Robert Gates said in a Sept. 16 speech that China's "investments in anti-ship weaponry and ballistic missiles could threaten America's primary way to project power and help allies in the Pacific -- particularly our forward bases and carrier strike groups." source - Bloomberg

China preparing for armed conflict 'in every direction'. China is preparing for conflict 'in every direction', the defense minister said on Wednesday in remarks that threaten to overshadow a visit to Beijing by his US counterpart next month.
"In the coming five years, our military will push forward preparations for military conflict in every strategic direction," said Liang Guanglie in an interview published by several state-backed newspapers in China. "We may be living in peaceful times, but we can never forget war, never send the horses south or put the bayonets and guns away," Mr Liang added. China repeatedly says it is planning a "peaceful rise" but the recent pace and scale of its military modernisation has alarmed many of its neighbours in the Asia-Pacific, including Japan which described China's military build-up as a "global concern" this month. source - Telegraph UK

The UN Security Council will hold an emergency session after North Korea's deadly artillery strike Tuesday on a South Korean border island, a French diplomatic source said.
"(The missiles) appear to be targeting our fighter jets that fly near the Northern Limit Line (NLL)," the source said on customary condition of anonymity, referring to the Yellow Sea border. South Korea and the U.S. on Sunday launched large-scale naval drills off the Korean Peninsula's west coast, far south of the border where four people were killed and 18 others wounded in Tuesday's surprise attack on Yeonpyeong Island. The Soviet-designed SA-2 missile has a range of between 13 and 30 kilometers. Other missiles on the North's west coast, such as the Samlet and Silkworm with ranges of up to 95km, have also been put onto launch pads, the source said. "The military is preparing for the possibility of further provocations as the North Korean military has deployed firepower near the NLL and is preparing to fire," the source said." source - Yonhap New Agency
China may be bigger economy than US within two years. Here's a finding that will have any red-blooded American spluttering into his cornflakes. According to the Conference Board, a highly respected economic research association, China will overtake the US as the world's biggest economy by 2012, or within two years.

OK, so in dollar terms, that's obviously not going to be the case. It will be a lot longer than two years before China overtakes the US on that measure. But in terms of purchasing power parity, according to the Conference Board's latest world economic outlook, China is already nearly there, and by 2020 will have reached a size of output which is nearly half as big again as the US. In any case, in PPP terms, the Conference Board's projections show China as 24.1 per cent of world output by 2020, and the US at just 14.8 per cent." source - Telegraph UK
China prepared to take on US in currency battle. China has curtly dismissed a US proposal to address global economic imbalances, setting the stage for a potential showdown at next week's G20 meeting in Seoul. Cui Tiankai, a deputy foreign minister and one of China's lead negotiators at the G20, said on Friday that the US plan for limiting current account surpluses and deficits to 4 per cent of gross domestic product harked back "to the days of planned economies". Officials from China, Germany and South Africa on Friday added their voices to a chorus of complaint that the Fed's return to so-called quantitative easing would create instability and worsen imbalances by triggering surges of capital into other currencies. Tim Geithner, the US Treasury secretary, has proposed using what the US refers to as current account "guidelines" to accelerate global rebalancing, partly as a way of changing the debate away from simply pressing China to allow faster appreciation in the renminbi. But on Thursday and Friday, governments focused instead on the global impact of the Fed's action. "With all due respect, US policy is clueless," Wolfgang Schauble, German finance minister, told reporters. "It's not that the Americans haven't pumped enough liquidity into the market," he said. China halts shipments of necessary rare earth minerals to US. HONG KONG -- China, which has been blocking shipments of crucial minerals to Japan for the last month, has now quietly halted shipments of those materials to the United States and Europe, three industry officials said on Tuesday. The Chinese action, involving rare earth minerals that are crucial to manufacturing many advanced products, seems certain to further intensify already rising trade and currency tensions with the West. Until recently, China typically sought quick and quiet accommodations on trade issues. But the interruption in rare earth supplies is the latest sign from Beijing that Chinese leaders are willing to use their growing economic muscle. "The arrival of a new Middle East player startled Washington and Jerusalem: debkafile's military sources disclose that when Turkish Prime Minister Tayyep Erdogan met Syrian president Bashar Assad in Damascus Monday, Oct. 11, they talked less about the Kurdish question and more about the role China is willing to play in the military-intelligence alliance binding Syria, Iran and Turkey. Erdogan took the credit for China's unfolding involvement in the alliance in the role of big-power backer. Two recent events illustrate Beijing's intent: 1. From Sept. 20 to Oct. 6, the Turkish Air Force conducted its regular annual Anatolian Eagle exercise, this time without US and Israeli participation. Israel was not invited and America opted out. However, their place was taken by Chinese Sukhoi Su-27 and Mig-29 warplanes making their first appearance in Turkish skies. Our military sources report that the Chinese warplanes began touching down at the big Konya air base in central Turkey in mid-September for their debut performance in the Middle East and Europe. Konya has served NATO and the United States for decades as one of their most important air bases. 2. Our sources add that the Chinese planes refueled only once on their journey to Turkey in Iran. When they touched down at the Gayem al-Mohammad air base in central Iran, their crews were made welcome by the Iranian air force commander Gen. Ahmad Migani. It was the first time Chinese fighter-bombers are known to have visited the Islamic Republic. With the announcement Monday that it would pay up to $2.2 billion for a one-third stake in Chesapeake Energy assets, CNOOC lays claim to a share of properties that eventually could produce up to half a million barrels a day of oil equivalent. As part of the deal, the largest purchase of an interest in U.S. energy assets by a Chinese company, CNOOC has agreed to pay about $1.1 billion for a chunk of Chesapeake's assets in the Eagle Ford, a broad oil and gas formation that runs largely from southwest of San Antonio to the Mexican border." source - My SanAntonio.com

China beginning to dominate the world financial markets. WASHINGTON, Oct 3 (Reuters) - If there's one thing the world's economic powers can agree on, it's that none of them wants a strong currency right now. Most advanced economies expect lukewarm domestic growth at least through next year, leaving them unusually export-dependent. The major emerging economies, including China and Brazil, rely on exports too.

The deal reached last year -- which will see China receive oil for 20 years in exchange for 25 billion dollars in loans -- is a "milestone" for energy cooperation between the two neighbours, Hu said. The countries are still finalizing a deal that could see 70 billion cubic meters of Russian natural gas sent to China each year, and have also announced plans to jointly build a five-billion-dollar oil refinery in northern China. China confirms two nuclear reactors for Pakistan. BEIJING, Sept 21 (Reuters) - China on Tuesday gave its firmest government confirmation yet of plans to build two new nuclear reactors for Pakistan, but a Foreign Ministry spokeswoman said she did not know about talks over a bigger reactor deal. The spokeswoman Jiang Yu said China plans to help Pakistan expand its Chashma nuclear energy complex in Punjab by building two reactors in addition to one already operating and another nearing completion. Her comments also suggested Beijing may see no need to seek approval for the two new Chashma reactors from the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG), an international council of governments, some of whose members have voiced qualms about the deal.

Chinese warns US it will emerge as loser in trade war. A State Council think-tank in China has warned Washington that the US will come off worst in a trade war if it imposes sanctions against Beijing over the two nations' currency spat. Ding Yifan, a policy guru at the Development Research Centre, said China could respond by selling holdings of US debt, estimated at over $1.5 trillion (£963bn). This would trigger a rise in US interest rates. His comments at a forum in Beijing follow a string of remarks by Chinese officials questioning US credit-worthiness and the reliability of the dollar. China's authorities seem split over how to respond to moves on Capitol Hill for legislation to punish Beijing for holding down the yuan. The central bank has ruled out use of its "nuclear weapon", insisting that it would not exploit its $2.45 trillion of foreign reserves for political purposes. "The US Treasury market is a very important market for China," it said. China overtakes Japan to become world's number two economy. The Chinese march towards becoming the next global superpower passed another notable mark yesterday when it replaced Japan to become the world's second biggest economy. China's growth - at about ten per cent per year - has been spectacular, its voracious appetite fuelling demand for resources, machinery and products from the developing world. Analysts believe it is only a matter of time before it usurps the U.S. from top spot, with some predicting this could happen as soon as 2020.

Japan, China's top trading partner, has held the spot since 1968. China's ascent to second place emerged after growth figures were posted. The Japanese government revealed that the country's GDP grew at an annualized rate of just 0.4 per cent in the second quarter, far below the 4.4 per cent growth seen in the first quarter, and the 2.3 per cent expected by economists. China is growing at about ten per cent a year, while Japan's economy is forecast to grow between two to three per cent this year. This meant Japan's economic output was $1.29trillion, compared with Chinese economic output of $1.34trillion in the same quarter. The figures underscore China's emergence as a major economic power. It is already the world's biggest exporter, car buyer and steel producer."

China targets U.S. troops with arms buildup. China is aggressively building up military forces capable of striking U.S. forces in the western Pacific and elsewhere as part of what the Pentagon calls an array of high-tech "anti-access" missiles, submarines and warplanes in its latest annual report. The report to Congress on China's military power, released Monday, also warned that China's military is extending its global military reach beyond a weapons buildup to wage regional war with Taiwan and the United States.

ANALYSIS-China, U.S. playing risky game on the high seas. BEIJING, Aug 17 (Reuters) - The game of military bluff that China and the United States are playing off the Chinese coast could erupt in full-fledged crisis hitting the arteries of global trade if Pentagon worries about missteps ever come true. China has been investing big slices of its growing wealth in modernising its military, and turning its once creaky navy into a blue water fleet that can project power far from its shores, with nuclear submarines and, maybe one day, aircraft carriers.

China is sending naval vessels further afield, to the waters off Somalia to fight pirates, and most recently through the southern Japanese islands, to Tokyo's angst. That also worries Washington, the world's dominant power, which keeps a hefty military presence in the Asia-Pacific. While war between the two economically intertwined powers remains a remote possibility, the Pentagon warned on Monday of risks of "misunderstanding and miscalculation" getting out of hand in this trade-driven part of the world plied by thousands of ships daily carrying cargo and oil." source - Reuters.com
Pentagon warning over China military build-up. China is extending its military advantage over Taiwan and increasingly looking beyond, building up a force with power to strike in Asia as far afield as the US territory of Guam, the Pentagon said. In an annual report to Congress, the US Defense Department said Monday that China was ramping up investment in an array of areas including nuclear weapons, long-range missiles, submarines, aircraft carriers and cyber warfare. "The balance of cross-Strait military forces continues to shift in the mainland's favor," the report said. The Pentagon said China's military build-up on the Taiwan Strait has "continued unabated" despite improving political and commercial relations since the island elected Beijing-friendly President Ma Ying-jeou in 2008. Taiwan said Tuesday it was "closely monitoring" China's arms build-up and renewed calls for the United States to sell it upgraded F16 jets and diesel submarines in the wake of the report.
Pentagon warning over China military build-up. "Current trends in China's military capabilities are a major factor in changing East Asian military balances and could provide China with a force capable of conducting a range of military operations in Asia well beyond Taiwan," it said. China's military doctrine has traditionally emphasized the ability to strike within an area extending to Japan's Okinawa island chain and throughout the South China Sea east of Vietnam, the report said. But Chinese strategists are now looking to expand their reach further to be able to hit targets as far away as Guam, including much of mainland Japan and the Philippines, it said. China is working on the longer-range precision missile, but probably needs more work on the technical infrastructure to put the weapon into use, an official who helped draft the report said on condition of anonymity. Pentagon: China's military power growing . WASHINGTON (AP) - China's drive to transform itself into a major military power is being pursued in a secretive manner that increases the potential for misunderstanding and military conflict with other nations, the Pentagon says in a new report. The Defense Department's annual assessment, released Monday, says Beijing is upgrading its hefty arsenal of land-based missiles, modernizing its nuclear forces and expanding its fleet of attack submarines. The effort comes as China has suspended military-to-military talks with the U.S., which could reassure the U.S. about the motives behind Beijing's military buildup. U.S.-China relations have been particularly strained in recent months, as China rejected the results of an investigation blaming North Korea for the sinking of a South Korean warship. China's military buildup also is seen as a threat to the U.S. ability to defend Taiwan." source - My Way News
